This month the British Dental Health Foundation launches its 35th dental health campaign to improve dental care and oral hygiene. This year, the campaign slogan is Teeth4Life with emphasis on:
As a member of Britain's leading independent authority on oral health care Dencover Dental Insurance is fully committed to the ideals of The British Dental Health Foundation. The BDHF is dedicated to improving the quality of the nation's dental health. According to 2009 records, only 10 percent of the nation is registered with a dentist. Unfortunately, that fact is all too clear when we smile.
Your dental health will only get worse if you do not follow a regular oral health regimen. Twice daily teeth brushing will stop the build-up of plaque; consuming less sugary food and drink will lessen the amount of acids that attack the enamel and tooth structure and promote bacterial infection. Regular visits to a dentist or dental hygienist will ensure healthy gums and healthy teeth for life.
Many people do not realise the serious nature of bad oral health. Bad teeth lead to unhealthy gums. Not only do our mouths look bad and smell bad, in some cases bad oral hygiene could even have fatal consequences.
It has been widely reported that a case study published in Obstetrics and Gynecology found gingivitis to be the cause of a 35-year-old woman's child being stillborn. Inadequate oral hygiene causes gingivitis but this is reversible with professional treatment and good oral home care.
Poor oral hygiene affects more than the mouth, teeth and gums. Recent studies suggest a strong link between severe gum disease and premature births, diabetes and strokes.
What are the benefits of oral health?
Better breath: Good regular oral health stops plaque forming on the teeth and reduces the amount of bacteria in the mouth. Bacteria are the cause of bad breath and bad teeth.
Personal appearance: whiter, brighter teeth are more socially acceptable than stained or decaying teeth. If you are looking for a new job interview or a social date, you need to make sure your teeth are sparkling white.
Overall health: bad teeth and gums may lead to diabetes or heart problems.
We have created a new website dedicated to dental and oral health called Insure Your Smile. www.insureyoursmile.co.uk is a blog based web site with lots of great information and discussions on everyday dental hygiene and oral health topics. Although the site is not intended to offer advice in any way, it's goal is to create awareness around oral care for families. We hope that our blog encourages parents to approach their family dentists with the questions they feel will help them educate their children when it comes to their teeth and overall well being.
During National Smile Month you can help by educating your family, friends and children about the benefits of strong, healthy and clean teeth. We will all certainly have something to smile about then.
During National Smile Month we know that many groups - including dental practices, schools, youth clubs & scout and guide groups - across Great Britain will be holding events to promote better dental hygiene. The Whitsun Bank Holiday period and school half-term is an excellent time to encourage involvement and get the message out to a wide audience.
During National Smile Month there are many ways to fund and promote an event should you decide to participate. Such events may include "Smiling for the camera" or free check-up with a local dentist. You could promote your event with a press release in the local paper or hand out flyers. Remember that most events are run with little to no funds, so if you are a local business wouldn't it be great to endorse an event in your local community?
